On-Site Geotechnical Drilling in the Bee Cave Marl (Kbc) – Insights from Central Texas

At A.C.E., we pride ourselves on hands-on fieldwork that informs every recommendation we make. Recently, our team conducted subsurface exploration in an area underlain by the Bee Cave Marl (Kbc), part of the Walnut Formation within the Fredericksburg Group of the Lower Cretaceous.


The Bee Cave Marl is known for its interbedded sequence of clay-rich marls, nodular limestones, and fossiliferous beds (commonly featuring Exogyra texana). This geology creates a distinctive landscape in the Texas Hill Country, with variable rock competence and soils that require careful characterization.


During drilling operations, we encountered typical conditions for this unit:


  • Expansive soil behavior from high-plasticity clay-marl layers, leading to swell-shrink potential with moisture fluctuations.

  • Variable rock competence due to alternating softer marl and harder limestone/nodular beds, impacting foundation design, excavatability, and bearing capacity.

  • Slope stability and erosion risks, necessitating thoughtful grading and drainage solutions.

  • Groundwater and karst features, which can influence site development.
