In 1776, the United States was a collection of colonies with rudimentary paths and waterways. Within decades, engineers began transforming the landscape:
The Erie Canal (completed 1825) opened the interior of the continent to trade and settlement.
Railroads stitched the nation together, enabling westward expansion and industrial growth.
Iconic structures like the Brooklyn Bridge (1883) demonstrated that American engineering could achieve what many thought impossible.
These projects weren’t just about moving people and goods. They embodied a belief that infrastructure could expand opportunity and unite a diverse population.
The 20th Century: Scaling for a Superpower
The 1900s brought engineering on a scale the world had never seen:
Massive dams like Hoover Dam tamed rivers and powered cities.
The Interstate Highway System, authorized in 1956, became the largest public works project in history.
Skyscrapers, airports, ports, and water systems redefined what was possible in urban life.
Every one of these achievements began the same way modern projects do - with a thorough understanding of the ground beneath them.

The Unsung Foundation: Geotechnical Engineering
While bridges and highways capture the public imagination, geotechnical engineering remains the invisible foundation of it all. Before any structure rises, geotechnical engineers investigate soil and rock conditions, assess risks like expansive clays or sinkholes, and design foundations that keep everything stable for decades.
In Texas, this work is especially critical. Our state’s geology - from the expansive Houston gumbos to the Austin Chalk formation beneath Central Texas - presents unique challenges. Pavements heave, foundations shift, and slopes can become unstable without expert analysis and design. Every TxDOT project, every commercial development, and every public building in our region relies on precise geotechnical insight to perform safely and economically.

Initiatives like the BUILD America 250 Act and ongoing investments in resilient infrastructure recognize this truth: America’s future strength depends on the quality of what we build today.
